• We require a holding fee of $1,000 to reserve your Regal Legacy puppy.

Do Northwoods puppies have required training?

Yes. At Northwoods Dobermans, we believe responsible Doberman ownership goes far beyond bringing a puppy home. Dobermans are intelligent, powerful, athletic, sensitive, and highly driven dogs. Proper training and continued education are essential to helping them become stable, confident family companions.

Beginning with our updated puppy program, Northwoods requires continued training and behavioral follow-up during important developmental stages.

4-Month Foundation Training

Puppies are required to complete an appropriate Foundation Training program around 4 months of age.

This stage focuses on foundational communication and life skills such as:

• Basic obedience
• Impulse control
• Leash manners
• Recall
• Handling
• Appropriate socialization
• Household manners
• Engagement with their family

6-Month Intermediate / Drive-Channeling Training

At approximately 6 months, puppies are required to continue into Intermediate / Drive-Channeling Training.

This is especially important as a Doberman enters adolescence and begins developing greater confidence, independence, physical ability, and drive.

Training at this stage helps the dog learn how to appropriately channel their energy and instincts while continuing to build reliable communication with their family.

6-Month Behavioral Screening

Around 6 months of age, Northwoods requires a Behavioral Screening.

The purpose is not to label a puppy as “good” or “bad.”

It allows us to identify potential concerns early, including changes involving:

• Resource guarding
• Handling tolerance
• Resting-space behavior
• Toy possession
• Reactivity
• Fearfulness
• Impulse control
• Other concerning behavioral changes

Owners are required to return the completed screening along with their intermediate training documentation.

If a concern is identified, we want to know about it early.

Early communication gives us the opportunity to help the family find an appropriate solution before a manageable concern becomes a serious adult behavior problem.

Training Is for the Whole Family

One of the most important things we want our families to understand is that training isn't just for the Doberman.

The entire household needs to learn:

• How to communicate with the dog
• How to recognize body language
• How to reinforce appropriate behavior
• How to manage resources
• How to establish consistent boundaries
• How to safely handle adolescence and increased drive
• How to respond when behavior changes

A Doberman doesn't live in a training facility.

They live with your family.

That means the whole family needs to understand how to help the dog succeed.

What If I Notice a Behavioral Problem?

Please contact Northwoods early.

We would much rather have a family contact us about a small concern than wait until the behavior has become dangerous or difficult to manage.

Owners should never attempt to physically confront, punish, or forcibly remove an item from a dog displaying resource guarding or other concerning behavior.

Depending upon the situation, Northwoods may recommend additional management, training, or evaluation by an appropriately qualified behavior professional.

Are These Requirements Part of My Contract?

Yes. The applicable training, behavioral screening, documentation, and other ownership requirements are incorporated into the puppy purchase agreement/addendum provided to each buyer.

Buyers are responsible for reviewing and signing the applicable agreement before taking ownership of a Northwoods puppy.

The signed contract and addendum control the specific requirements applicable to your puppy

Picking for Personality

• Puppy personalities develop over time.
• Ideal age to assess traits: 5–6 weeks, with some visible at 3 weeks.
• Temperament may evolve after leaving the litter, so placement is based on long-term suitability.
